It was planetary pandemonium for animation fans when the creators of “Batman: The Animated Series” unveiled the monster hit series “Justice League” back in 2001. Taking the premise of Hanna-Barbera’s classic “Superfriends” [of uniting heroes to fight evil on a global scale as originally done in the comic books] and giving it a 21st century upgrade, the show’s producers boldly took the time to flesh out the members of the League, adding a depth to what motivates them as heroes. This was never done with the Justice League of the 70s & 80s. Justice League featured Emmy-worthy production values in animated storytelling and brilliant thought and care in voice casting. Not to mention a magnificent main title theme by Lolita Ritmanis. Given the show’s mature tone, fans were dumbfounded that DVDs of Justice League were only released as single disc “DC Comics Kids Collection” volumes with no more than 3-4 eps instead of season sets. (Note: If you own all of the original JL volumes then you already have Justice League – Season One episodes 1-15, and should consider the remaining 11 episodes plus the exclusive EXTRAS on this set before deciding.)

It only took ‘em FOUR years (since the first JL volume released), but Warner Home Video will finally release the LONG-AWAITED Justice League – Season One DVD on March 21st! This 4-disc (575 min.) set features all 26 episodes (multi-part arcs); Full-Frame (1.33:1) video (fans campaigned to WHV for this format with following seasons to be in widescreen as originally animated); English audio; and English, Spanish, French subtitles. Well worth the wait, and Highly Recommended!!!

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkgirl & Martian Manhunter! Seven DC Comics legends who normally work alone but are brought together out of necessity to form a team of heroes to protect earth from threats both on and above it. They form The Justice League!

After several one disc releases with one or two episodes, Justice League finally gets its own DVD set! While I agree with many reviewers about the packaging and the format of the DVD’s not being quite up to snuff, the set is STILL worth purchasing! Here are the eppys with the bonus features:

Disc 1

Secret Origins, Pt. 1 – Superman & Batman run across a new threat to mankind that’s too big for even them to handle! They run across a new ally in J’hon Jonz, The Maratian Manhunter. But this new alien threat catch on to them and try to take them out!

Secret Origins, Pt. 2 – The trio of Superman, Batman and Maratian Manhunter receive help in the form of Hawkgirl, The Green Lantern (John Stewart) and The Flash. They also get unexpected help from Wonder Woman (I believe JL is the first time Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl and this version of Green Lantern has appeared in any DC animated series/The Flash appeared once in Superman: The Animated Series).

Secret Origins, Pt. 3 – The seven heroes band together to make a final stand against the alien threat to earth!

In Blackest Night, Pt. 1 – A tragic incident from Green Lantern’s past comes back to haunt him as The Manhunters come to earth to bring him back for trial…….for destroying an entire planet!

Paradise Lost, Pt. 1 – Feeling homesick, Wonder Woman returns to Themescara only to find that everyone (including her mother) has been turned to stone! A villian named Faust forces Wonder Woman to commit crimes to free them.

Paradise Lost, Pt. 2 – Superman, The Flash, Batman and Martian Manhunter follow Wonder Woman to help her combat this new threat. The ending is both joyous and sad.

War World, Pt. 1 – Superman is captured and taken to a planet called War World. He is forced to fight in their barbaric games while Martian Manhunter, The Green Lantern and Hawkgirl try to rescue him.

Enormously entertaining, and extremely enlightening, Inside Deep Throat is so much more than just a documentary on the 1972 skin flick Deep Throat. The film also presents – in often candid and lurid detail – the moral and censorship battles – that have constantly defined American popular culture for more than thirty years. In one pivotal scene, an elderly woman is asked why she went to see Deep Throat, and she replies by saying that she wanted to see a dirty movie, she enjoyed it, and that she didn’t want government or anyone else dictating what she should or shouldn’t see.

Herein lies the essential argument of this colorfully entertaining, sexually explicit, and occasionally perceptive movie that takes the viewer on a journey from the innocence of the early seventies, through the tumultuous, politically wrought censorship battles of the eighties, to the present day where the adult film business is now a multi-million dollar industry, and where professionalism and money seem to be the name of the game.

Inside Deep Throat uses a mixture of original footage from the film, interviews with the people who made Deep Throat, and questions a number of counterculture types, such as Gore Vidal, John Walters, and Annie Sprinkle, who comment on the effects of the film, past and present. Divided into two distinct parts: the first half is about the making of the film, while the second deals the ramifications of its release, the effect Deep Throat ultimately had on its stars, and the U.S. Government’s desperate, and often successful attempts to have the film banned.

It’s probably a bit of a stretch to say that Deep Throat single-handedly changed the nature of the industry. But the film definitely served a purpose and came along at a time when the sexual revolution was changing the way people thought about sexual activity. After hearing Johnny Carson’s jokes about the movie on the Tonight Show – middle-aged, older, and intrigued suburbanites would line up at seedy theatres all across the country just to get a glimpse of Linda Lovelace’s oral abilities. An act that had previously been considered an obscenity and socially forbidden, had now gained a glimmer of respectability- the New York Times even labeled the movie the new “porn chic.”

Inside deep Throat does a great job of showing how the movie’s fame and notoriety ultimately lead to the victimization and ill treatment of its stars. Linda Lovelace spent her life constantly vacillating between being proud of what she did, and later becoming a spokesperson for the feminist revolution against pornography by claiming that her performance in Deep Throat constituted rape. Approaching middle age and penniless, she desperately cashes in on her fame by appearing nude in an issue of Playboy.

Harry Reems, the hot, young male star who, at the last moment, shed his title as a production assistant to become the primary object of Linda’s affections, initially enjoyed celebrity, but found fame and recognition fleeting. Deep Throat had branded him, and he found it impossible to be taken seriously as an actor. Harry faced serious jail time in a federal trial, and spiraled downwards into alcoholism and drug abuse when he couldn’t get any conventional acting jobs.

Of course, the advent of the VCR in the late seventies meant that people could watch adult movies in the privacy of their own homes, and the moral crusade against hard-core adult entertainment in movie theatres somewhat tempered. Sharply edited, with a great sense of pacing, and often very funny, Inside Deep Throat is recommended for anyone who lived through the freewheeling, hedonistic days of the seventies. The movie also serves as a reminder that the culture wars, social morality, and issues of censorship are still as relevant today as they were thirty years ago. Mike Leonard February 05.

If you’re old enough to have seen DEEP THROAT when it was first released in 1972, then the documentary INSIDE DEEP THROAT will perhaps be a rewarding trip down Nostalgia Lane (assuming your memory cells weren’t fried by all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll of the 60s).

DEEP THROAT was the first porn film exhibited in public theaters, and the first to be viewed openly by mixed couples, undoubtedly elbowing out the raincoat crowd. It was produced for $25,000; to date, it’s grossed $600 million, and is the most profitable, independently produced film of all time. Oh, and it’s centerpiece attraction was actress Linda Lovelace fellating a goofy doctor character, played by Harry Reems, who’s diagnosed Linda’s character as having her clitoris in her throat. Do you get the naughty picture?

This film is a montage of archival footage from the era liberally sprinkled with interviews with the principals – producer Gerard Damiano, Lovelace, and Reems – and many others, including Hugh Hefner, Larry Flynt, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Dick Cavett, former porn stars Annie Sprinkle, Georgina Spelvin and Andrea True, plus authors, feminists, and the legal eagles that argued their respective sides in the legal battle that ultimately found scapegoat Reems guilty on obscenity charges. (Damiano and Lovelace had court immunity.)

The roughly 90+ minute film summarizes DEEP THROAT’s conception, creation, release, distribution, and co-optation by the Mob, the anti-obscenity furor that the film sparked, and the ultimate acceptance of porn that followed due to it’s wide distribution and availability via the introduction of the home video player around 1979. Mind you, the government anti-obscenity laws that convicted Reems still stand; they’ve just been overwhelmed by indifference and the glut of smut.

Is INSIDE DEEP THROAT graphically sexual? Well, yes and no. It does linger lovingly on that famous sequence where Linda orally engulfs all of Harry’s member, but otherwise the sex scenes are no more graphic than in other recent mainstream releases – MONSTER’S BALL (2001) and IN THE CUT (2003) come to mind. That said, however, I have to believe that the rating board would have assigned an “X” instead of an “NC-17″, based solely on the display of Linda’s swallowing ability, if the former category was still in existence. Unless, of course, the board believes Bubba’s Oval Office Oral Copulation Postulate, which is that the act isn’t really “sex”. Sure fooled me.

This documentary may illustrate the difference in the genre between then and now. In the 70s, porn actors and actresses seemed to be having more fun, and there was a certain relative innocence to it all missing in today’s productions, which are cranked out in volume to maximize profits, and in which the performers labor joylessly to maximize the raunch for sheer shock value. “Debbie Does the Entire 1st Marine Division In One Night” – who cares?

Perhaps the most telling (and pathetic) point was made in a contemporary interview with Larry Parrish, the Memphis prosecutor who successfully convicted Reems under anti-smut laws extant in 1976 (only to have the verdict overturned on a technicality by a federal district court in ‘77). He wistfully observed that if the troublesome Al Qaeda terrorists would only go away, then the government could then refocus its energies on the more meaningful battle against porn. Puhleeze! God save us from the morality zealots of any ilk, Muslim or Christian! Perhaps “Debbie” needs to show Parrish a good time.

One word: WOW! After I got my “Ultimate 3D Collection” assortment (which also included “Alien Adventure” and “Encounter in the Third Dimension” IMAX DVDs), the first movie I had to see was “Haunted Castle”, since I love to go ghost investigating when I can get the free time and people to join me. Sure, the movie doesn’t even comes close to anything realistic in the field of paranormal investigation, but as a 3D CGI fun ride, it’s awesome. I can see that it would be quite boring in 2D, but I watched it with the accompanying Razor 3D shutter glasses (put out by edimensional) and was totally blown away. Got my mother to sit in and enjoy the film as well. We were both loving the dimensional effects, and more importantly, the fantastic music. If it wasn’t for “Haunted Castle,” I would never have known about “Lunascape”. Can’t wait to get their “Reminiscence” album, which has the “Lane Navachi” song from this movie on it. “Arid” is also excellent in the movie, though “Little Things of Venom” is really the only good song from their album “At The Close Of Every Day”. As for the CGI in the movie, it kind of reminds me of the first two “Myst” games for computers. Really, the only thing that dates it is the globular effect used for when the three knights melt at the beginning of the film. Everything else is still excellent. My only complaint would be that the roller coaster segment doesn’t go fast enough and wasn’t more like the CGI “Devil’s Mine Ride” short film (which can be found on the “Computer Animation Festival 2.0″ video, if you can find a copy). If you love IMAX and 3D movies, get “Haunted Castle”. You won’t be disappointed, unless you don’t have a pair of shutter glasses.

Indeed the 3D effects in this film make you feel as if you are in a motion simulator at times and it’s a very cool experience for the 3d fanatic like myself. I wasn’t as enamored of the music as some of the other reviewers here but it wasn’t bad.It did need a bit more humor for Harry Shearer ( The Simpsons,Spinal Tap) to work with but it is cool and goth looking and fun for kids except for maybe very young ones.You do need a standard tube set to make it work with the included system but rumor has it that version for LCD and projectors systems are not far off. Untill then this is the best we got.

As a Japanese living in the United Staes, I can say totally, that this film is amazing. There’re some critics says Tom Cruise’s acting and so on, however, this film sucessfully depicts the history of Japan, and people’s traditional lives and the end of samurai era.

This is a spectacular movie with sweeping sword actions and it is based on the true history events in japan, I’ve seen a lot of samurai movies(made in japan for japanese) but i can say this one is GREAT as the other movies, plus this is not usual hollywood movies that awfully depicts samurais and even Yakuzas and brush off the truth.

I can say, however, without Tom Cruise, this movie could have also been great as well. But i would guess that it is because of him, this movie gained more attention among people and so typical americans can get the idea of what samurai really is and what they really think.

so overall i gave this movie 5 stars. I plan to go watch it again.

This film has been compared (a lot) to Dances with Wolves due to the fact that they both share similar themes. A Civil War era soldier who finds himself thrown in the middle of a different culture and ends up embracing it and becoming part of it.

However, Edward Zwick’s film differs from the Kevin Costner Oscar winner in that the principal character, Lt. Nathan Algren (Cruise) is down on his luck, having become a drunken caricature of his former self, deeply regretful of his actions, who accepts a job as an instructor for an incipient Japanese army that needs to be prepared to fight against the Samurai.

As he arrives to Tokyo he starts training a useless bunch of would-be soldiers who are sent to fight even if they’re not ready for it. As a result, the newly formed army gets butchered by the battle experienced Samurai. During that battle, Algren fights bravely and kills one of the highest ranking warriors, getting the interest of the famed Katsumoto, the last great Samurai leader, who orders him captured and brought to his son’s village as a prisoner.

Once there, Algren’s life is changed forever as he gets to know the real lifestyle of the Samurai and their people. They turn out not to be the savages that the Japanese government makes them out to be. After spending winter with them, Algren “changes sides” and joins the Samurai in fighting the Emperor’s army.

The title of the movie tells the final outcome. The Samurai lose the battle. Progress triumphs over tradition. New over old. But Algren’s past demons are redeemed by his courageous actions helping the Samurai.

The true worth of this movie is its look. You can definetely see where the budget went (other than Cruise’s salary). A whole village was built and the attention to detail is astonishing. The costumes are simply amazing, especially the battle armors. The costume designer is Ngila Dickson, who also worked in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Also of notice are the battle scenes, which are breathtaking. Very violent, but not gratuitous, they serve the story very well.

As for the acting, Cruise does a fine job, and is slowly but consistently becoming a better actor (even if this particular performance was not nominated for an Academy Award), but the movie belongs to Ken Watanabe (who was indeed nominated) as Katsumoto. His presence demands attention. He is the center of every scene he’s in. Koyuki’s performance as Taka, Katsumoto’s sister and Algren’s love interest, should also be noticed.
